I don’t need to tell you that not all contractors are good. In fact, my first thought when I heard the phrase “best contractors” is, “There are not many of them.” That’s why I’m always careful when I hire a contractor, because I know that there are a lot of bad ones out there.
I know that most contractors are dishonest, but there are some good ones, and some are just honest. I am not an expert in the field of remodeling, but I would personally hire a contractor that follows the same set of ethics that I do (or at least as close as possible).
Thats right, I said it, and you can quote me. Most anyone who says they are an expert in the field is lying. I have only had one (not in my field) that was completely honest and ethical and that was my husband. No one could tell me anything different about him than I already knew.
My husband is a contractor, and for reasons that are still unknown to me he has been doing home remodels for almost a decade. He started out by doing some basic remodels, then moved on to major remodels, and now he’s doing a complete renovation of my house. He’s trustworthy, honest, and a stickler for the code of ethics. But I’m telling you, he will be happy.
If you want the remodeling contractors to be happy, then your house needs to have a good code of ethics. No one is going to be happy if you hire them to do a remodel for you, but they will be happy if you hire them to do something that makes them happy.
A good code of ethics is not merely a statement of what you should do, it is a statement of what is right or wrong. A good code of ethics is the way you treat your employees. If you have a good code of ethics, you will treat them well and they will take good care of you.
A good code of ethics is simply a way of doing things that makes you happy. It’s not a “do this and you’re happy, but not doing this and you’re unhappy”, or “don’t do this and you’re unhappy, but don’t do that and you’re unhappy.” For example, if it involves you paying more money over time to your contractor, that’s not a good code of ethics.
That same idea can apply to your remodeling contractors. You see a great deal of them go out of their way to make you happy. You see a contractor that works with you every step of the way, and if you don’t like him, you can always fire him. You see a contractor who puts extra effort in getting your home ready before the job starts, so that you can relax and enjoy the process.
