I live in NYC so I think that is the biggest difference between the two cities. NYC has a distinct character and spirit that is unique. Boston, on the other hand, is a lot more “American”.
I think that Boston’s character is what makes it so special, and that is the fact that it is the birthplace of American democracy (and hence its character). It is the original capital of Massachusetts and also the home of the largest concentration of people who are also American. Boston is also one of the largest cities with a significant population of LGBT people, and so it is also where I have been most frequently asked for advice on how to deal with this demographic.
The Boston area is a place in which the entire city is divided into four separate neighborhoods. So one of the major things to look out for is what the other neighborhoods have to say about those in the neighboring neighborhoods. The same can be said about gay neighborhoods. Boston is also a very large city with many hotels, restaurants, malls, and other places of interest.
This is where I get most of my LGBT-related advice. I look at the big cities all around the country and see areas I know well and assume I can get around without being asked for details. But I don’t know that for sure. Here in NYC, Boston, and the other Boston-like areas, I have to be very careful when answering the question “Are you gay?”.

Rather, I think many people are asking whether they are “gay” if the answer to that question is “I don’t know.

You know, Boston, which is a city with a long history of its own gay pride events, is more like a gay city than most of the cities in the US. So if you are gay, it means you like to go out, and you like the fact that you can go out and have fun, and the fact that you are not expected to conform to the societal norms of who your gay.
While there are no official statistics on gay population in the US, it’s estimated that there are somewhere between 300,000 and 500,000 openly gay people in the country. That’s close to 10% of the US population; the same as in Boston, but without the Pride events that have been going for years.
