The first thing that most people need to realize when they begin remodeling is that self-awareness is very different from self-knowledge. Self-awareness is really just a fancy way of saying, “I know what I’m doing is the problem.” If you don’t know what you’re doing, your actions are doomed to failure. Self-aware people know what they’re doing.
I can say that I am not self-aware, but I do know that I know that I know that I know that Im not doing anything.

Contractors should also stay away from subcontractors who can do a lot of work but will never get paid. They can often cause more problems than they solve.
Some contractors will just be good at their job and some will be good at theirs. It all depends on what kind of contractor you are looking for.
One of the biggest mistakes I have ever heard a subcontractor make is to always subcontract work they can do themselves. I have seen subcontractors do a good job on a home construction job, but the contractor never thought about what he was doing. If he did the work himself, you’d think he would do more than his fair share of it and maybe learn something. The problem is that he was subcontracting.
