The design process that Cape Cod Renovation works with is all about the idea of being able to visualize and envision the finished project through the eyes of someone who has never seen it before. This is the foundation of the design process. In the end, the client sees the finished project through the eyes of someone who has never seen it before. So we can’t always talk about it in plain language, but we can explain in broad strokes what the finished project should look like.
Cape Cod Renovation uses our design process to make sure the design and style of the finished project are consistent and timeless. We get to be the hands and eyes of the client, so the finished project should be beautiful, functional, and timeless.
The last thing we should be doing is telling the client what to do! And we won’t be. When we make a design decision, we use our design process to do the best job possible. We then go into that design decision making process with the client to help them see it as a project that will result in a beautiful, functional, and timeless finished product.
I think the challenge with a new client is that the challenge is to be able to communicate well enough to be interesting to the client, while also being able to communicate with the client and getting the client to see your point of view. I think that is a hard combination to achieve.
I think that the best way to explain this is to use a graphic: If I’m designing a floor plan, I’m designing the best floor plan possible. If the client is talking about how they want to put in the best possible floor plan, I’m talking about how to put the best possible floor plan in. I’m not talking about the best floor plan for the cheapest price possible. My job is to make sure the client wants the best floor plan possible.
That’s how it sounds to me. When you’re working with someone to design a new house, you want to think about the best outcome for the client, not the cheapest or easiest floor plan. If you want a house to look nice, then you need to think about how to get the most out of your design, and I’d argue that you should be thinking about the client’s needs and what they want.
