If you are like me, you probably have a basement that is a bit of a disaster. It is time to get the job done and get it done right. You can remodel your basement and not lose the value of your home.
My basement is a collection of the most hideous pieces of furniture in the world. Most of which are made of cheap plastic and other junk from the 1970s. It is my wish that my basement would be a functional space that I would actually own and use. You have no idea how many times I’ve been tempted by a bad deal only to find out that the deal was for a basement remodel.
A basement remodel is different than an attic remodel. In an attic remodel you have to get the whole thing up and running, but with a basement remodel you just need to do a job, put a few items away, and then enjoy your room again.
A basement remodel is much like a basement renovation; it’s a great place to hide a leaky faucet. But in comparison, a basement remodel is just a job. This is because the stuff you need to do to get your basement to work are the same stuff you need to do to fix a leaky faucet. That is, unless you have an F.U.R.A. and that is a thing.
The last time I was working on my basement, I was thinking to myself, “well, I’m not going to be able to clean up my mess, so I’m going to get a new job.” While I really enjoy my basement, even though I’m quite fond of it, I’m not going to be doing the whole thing at once.
Actually, its a good thing because even though you get by with a lot of elbow grease renovating a home is not the most practical thing you can do in your free time. If you want to remodel a basement, you might want to think about getting that done in a month.
In our basement remodeling project in Salt Lake City, we took out a bunch of stuff, replaced the old drywall with new drywall, added a few new light switches, added some light fixtures, painted the ceiling, and removed a bunch of drywall. If any of this sounded weird, well, you can imagine how we felt. We spent months there and still loved the room.
Salt Lake City has a lot of cool stuff going on, but we didn’t want to get stuck with it all. So we decided to go with a cheap basement remodel and just remove the old drywall. It was easy, quick, and inexpensive. We’re not sure if it’s a good idea, but we didn’t find out until we were halfway through.
It may sound like a lot of work, but it is not. It was a lot faster and less expensive than a full-time remodel and we didnt have to worry about getting stuck in a job we hated.
We had a pretty big problem with the old dry wall. It was just too thick and we felt the need to just tear it down and start over. Its a shame, because the basement was pretty awesome and we were really happy about it actually. But our basement remodel was just so much better. We are hoping to get to a point where we can just put in a fresh and shiny new floor and have the place looking like a completely new home.
